40 Afghan militants, 110 Taliban surrender to Afghan military

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — At least 150 militants of radical movements surrendered to the Afghan military in the eastern province of Kunar, Khaama Press reports referring to a statement from the provincial governor’s press service.

According to the statement, among the surrendered 110 members of the Taliban radical movement and 40 militants of the Islamic State terrorist group. The militants renounced violence, laid down their arms and surrendered to the government.

The statement also noted that the provincial deputy governor, security officials and tribal elders welcomed the militants ’decision. They noted that the militants’ renunciation of violence is an important step in the process of reconciliation and resolution of the conflict.

Deputy Governor Gul Mohammad Bedar added that the militants surrendered the light and heavy weapons at their disposal. He also noted that the decision of the militants will contribute to ensuring security in the province of Kunar.

In Afghanistan, there is a confrontation between government forces and the militants of the radical Taliban movement, which had previously captured a significant territory in rural areas of the country and launched an attack on large cities. Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are conducting joint counter-terrorism operations across the country.
