5G and cancer risk: what scientists think about it and how to protect yourself

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — 5G wireless technology is gradually spreading around the world. But the question is: how much do they affect our health?

The fifth generation of mobile technologies, also known as 5G, was created to increase download speed and improve the quality of communication in general, which, of course, cannot but please the average users. In general, the introduction of 5G will play an important role in how quickly more and more innovative technologies will come into our daily lives, which, you see, is also good.

At the same time, there is not much talk about the potential impact of 5G on health, as we might like it to be. So this is exactly what we are now trying to figure out.

The most famous biological effect of radio frequency waves is heating. High doses of waves can lead to an increase in the temperature of exposed tissues and even burns, although this does not apply to mobile devices, since they work at low levels.

But here is the most important thing: scientists have found that radio frequency waves are “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

In 2011, this was the conclusion of 30 scientists from different countries who are members of the working group of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The findings were published in The Lancet Oncology.

Is this a cause for concern? Maybe. But, by comparison, exhaust gases, pickled vegetables and some birth control drugs also belong to the group of potential carcinogens .

Today, WHO claims that adverse health effects have not been confirmed, but research is ongoing.

Some experts, however, say that carcinogenic effects have been established and occur even at low but regular levels of exposure, including DNA damage, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, the effect on sperm morphology and fetal development.

Recent data – for example, a study published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health – also suggests that evidence of the biological properties of radio frequency waves is gradually accumulating, and although nothing is finally clear, the possibility of oncological and non-oncological effects cannot be ruled out.

What is the result?

The transition from 4G to 5G will be associated with the emergence of a larger number of stations for transmitting signals that will allow these signals to be transmitted at the highest possible speeds. This is what is known for sure.

Will it be worse for us? Even scientists are not ready to give an answer to the question.

Although they tend to think that existing recommendations should be reviewed, especially for children under 16 years of age and pregnant women.
