Afghanistan: Security personnel killed in Taliban attack

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — An Afghan security element was killed, on Sunday, in a Taliban suicide bombing on a military base in the southern Kandahar province.

A state spokesperson, Ahmed Bahir, said in a statement, that the Taliban launched an armed attack on the base, located in the district of “Haekriz”, immediately after the bombing.

Bahir explained that the explosion killed an Afghan police officer and wounded another.

He added that the clashes that followed the attack resulted in the death of 9 Taliban and the injury of 6 others.

For its part, the Taliban claimed, in a statement, that the attack killed a large number of Afghan soldiers, without giving further details.

And Afghanistan has been witnessing, since the American invasion in 2001, a struggle between the Taliban movement on the one hand, and government and international forces led by the United States on the other hand, which caused thousands of civilian casualties.

The Taliban, which controls nearly half of the country, launch almost daily attacks against the government, and refuse to conduct direct negotiations with them on the pretext that they are “illegal”, and with a view to achieving peace with them, the exit of American forces from the country.
