Afghanistan: Taliban threatens Donald Trump with new fighting if talks stop

After the death of a US soldier in a bomb attack in Kabul, the US president announced Saturday the cancellation of a secret meeting with the Taliban to conclude a deal negotiated for a year.

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The Taliban threatened the United States with retaliation on Tuesday (September 10th) if they abandoned talks on a withdrawal of their troops from Afghanistan, as US President Donald Trump decided.

“We had two ways to end the occupation of Afghanistan, the jihad and the fighting, and the talks and negotiations. If Trump wants to stop the talks, we will take the first path and they will regret it soon,” said a spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.

“America will suffer”

The day before, the American president had hammered that these negotiations were “ended for good”.

He also said Saturday night cancel a secret meeting scheduled at Camp David with the Taliban to conclude a deal negotiated for a year. A decision justified by the death of a US soldier in a bombing in Kabul claimed by the Taliban.

Since then, they warned Sunday that “America will suffer more than anyone else, that its credibility will be undermined, that its human and financial losses will increase”.

At the same time, the movement of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as it is called, said “to believe” that Washington will return to the negotiating table, to put an end to a conflict of more than 18 years.

The head of the American diplomacy, Mike Pompeo, did not exclude Sunday a resumption of the negotiations, provided that the insurgents “change their attitude” and “confirm the commitments they had made” .
