ALBANIA (OBSERVATORY) – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini announced the start of talks with Albania and Macedonia on their accession to the European Union.
“The European Commission has recommended to the European Council to open negotiations with Albania and Macedonia on their accession to the Union, and the Council has taken a decision in this regard,” Mogherini told reporters on Tuesday.
Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey are officially candidate countries. Negotiations with Turkey, Montenegro and Serbia have been phased in during the years 2005, 2012 and 2014.
In February, the European Commission published a new strategy on expanding the European Union to include the Western Balkans. UNHCR indicated that it had presented to Serbia and Montenegro the next steps needed to complete their accession to the Union in 2025.
