INDIA (OBSERVATORY) – At least 24 children and three adults died when a school bus they were traveling on crashed from a mountain road in India’s Himachal Pradesh state, police said on Monday.
Santosh Patial, a senior state police official, said the authorities had recovered 27 bodies from the scene, including the bus driver.
The disaster occurred when the bus veered off the road and fell into a narrow valley in the area. The bus carrying children, all under the age of 13, was studying at a private school in the town of Noorpur, 300 km from Shimla state capital.
An officer at the scene said three children were taken to a government hospital for head injuries.
India ranks first in the number of fatal road fatalities, with the latest figures released by the government showing that more than 150,000 people died in road accidents in 2015 alone.
