UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Tornadoes hit the US state of Tennessee early Tuesday, killing at least eight people and causing major damage in the Nashville area, officials said.
“Eight deaths so far” have been recorded in four regions of this southeastern state, “said Melissa Hacks of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. Scenes broadcast by local media showed completely destroyed buildings after the cyclones on Monday night.
Trees and electricity poles were uprooted and homes destroyed.
“Nashville is suffering and our society is in pain,” tweeted Mayor John Cooper.
The hurricanes struck hours before polling stations opened in 14 US states, including Tennessee, as part of “Big Tuesday”, which constitutes a decisive stop in the Democratic primary.
