Bad combination: how vegetarianism actually affects the brain

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Switching to plant diets for the good of the planet and your own health deserves praise. Only vegetarianism is not necessarily good for you.

A new study published by BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health shows that a vegetarian diet increases the risks associated with a lack of choline, a substance also known as vitamin B4 and found primarily in animal products.

Choline is crucial for brain health (especially during fetal development, but also for cognitive performance in general) and affects liver function (especially with regard to fat metabolism and damage by free radicals).

And although it is produced in the human body, this is not enough to satisfy basic needs.

Recall that the main sources of choline are beef, eggs, dairy products, chicken and fish . Yes, choline can also be found in beans, nuts and cruciferous vegetables, but here it is noticeably smaller.

The problem, experts say, also lies in the fact that the usual consumption of choline does not comply with current dietary recommendations. And science has reason to believe that this may be due to the trend for conscious consumption and rejection of animal products.

“If people do not receive choline in the quantities necessary for the normal functioning of the body, we need medical strategies for its production. And especially at key stages of the life cycle, such as pregnancy,” conclude the authors of the work.
