CHINA (OBSERVATORY) – The aircraft carrier Type-001A, the first such vessel entirely designed and built in China, left the Dalian shipyard on Monday and headed for the sea for first tests.
The Chinese Navy has begun the first sea trials of aircraft carrier Type-001A, says the South China Morning Post .
The tests, which coincide with the Navy’s 69th anniversary, will be limited in scope and duration, but analysts said they were of symbolic importance as China sought to highlight its progress as a naval power.
According to military expert Song Zhongping, the main purpose of the tests is to test the ship’s propulsion and communication systems. Electronic systems and armaments will be tested in other tests in the near future.
Type-001A was launched at the DSIC construction site in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province. Work began in 2013 and was launched in 2017. The length of the aircraft carrier is 315 meters while the width is 75 meters. The ship is capable of accommodating 36 J-15 fighters.
