China is stepping up intellectual property protection

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Geng Shuang said in Beijing on Wednesday that China is constantly strengthening the enforcement and protection of intellectual property rights.

A few days ago, the Financial Times reported that China’s intellectual property protection has been on the rise and China has become an innovative country. In this regard, Geng Shuang shared a series of data at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regular press conference:

“Currently, China ranks second in the world in R&D investments, first in number of patent applications, and third in number of effective invention patents. According to the Global Innovation Index 2019 report published by The World Intellectual Property Organization, China ranks 14th in the world, rising for four consecutive years.According to the World Bank Global Business Environment Report 2020, China’s business environment rose from the 78th place it was in 2017 to 31st in 2019.

“Of course, China is still a developing country and our intellectual property protection is still imperfect. China is committed to equal protection of intellectual property rights of domestic and foreign enterprises and is constantly taking effective measures to increase knowledge of enforcing and protecting intellectual property rights, “said Geng Shuang.

He added that last year, China has introduced a number of policies to strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights. This includes changes to the Law on Trademark Replacement and providing ideas for strengthening intellectual property protection.

Geng also added that China is part of almost all major international intellectual property treaties and that it is currently actively promoting efforts to join the Hague Agreement for the International Registration of Industrial Designs.
