China urges calm, restraint on Syria

CHINA (OBSERVATORY) –┬áChina’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ma Zhaoxu urged on Friday the parties concerned to maintain calm and exercise restraint on the situation in Syria.

Ma said at a meeting of the Security Council at the request of Russia that the current situation in Syria is dangerous, adding that Syria is at a crossroads between peace and war.

“We urge the parties concerned to maintain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from any step that would lead to further escalation and resolve the issue peacefully through consultation and dialogue,” he said.

At this critical juncture, the Security Council must fulfill its obligations to build unity and consensus and to do everything in its power to prevent war.

The urgent priority is to launch a comprehensive, objective and impartial investigation into reports of the use of chemical weapons in Syria in order to reach formal and reliable results, he said.

He stressed that China always supports the resolution of disputes through peaceful settlement and always opposes the use of force or threat of force in international relations.

He stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, stressing that China is convinced that there is no military solution to the Syrian issue and that the only way out is the political settlement.
