China urges to fight conspiracy theories regarding coronavirus

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — China called on the international community to continue to fight the coronavirus together, as well as to resist rumors and conspiracy theories regarding the spread of the disease.

So, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang on Thursday at a briefing answered a question from journalists about whether the new coronavirus could be related to a “laboratory leak” or “development of biological weapons.”

“At present, the Chinese people are waging war against the new coronavirus and are responsible not only for themselves, but also for ensuring the safety of public health in the world. At the same time, some people and the media either because of bad intentions or because of ignorance make sensational statements,” the diplomat said.

According to him, “the head of WHO has repeatedly stated that there is no evidence that a new type of coronavirus has been bred in the laboratory or is the result of the production of biological weapons.”

“We are fighting not only the virus, but also conspiracy theories,” said Gen Shuang.

“Many well-known medical experts in the world also believe that statements such as“ laboratory leakage ”or“ development of biological weapons “are not scientifically based. Conspiracy theories only generate fear, rumors and prejudices that threaten global cooperation in the fight against the epidemic,” he said.

The official representative of the department also emphasized, “in the face of the epidemic, it is necessary to strive for the triumph of science before ignorance, to refute rumors with truth, to replace prejudices with cooperation.”

“We hope that the international community, waging a joint fight against coronavirus, will also continue to work together against conspiracy theories and “political viruses,” said Geng Shuang.
