China’s first coronavirus infection detected in November 2019

US, WASHINGTON (NEWS OBSERVATORY) — The first case of new coronavirus infection in China was recorded on November 17, 2019. This was reported on Friday by the South China Morning Post , citing government documents.

According to official figures, the first patient to be confirmed infected with coronavirus on November 17 was a 55-year-old resident of Hubei Province. From this moment, the health authorities recorded from one to five cases of infection every day for a month.

By December 15, the total number of patients was 27, five days later the number of confirmed cases increased to 60, and on January 1, to 381.

Earlier, the World Health Organization reported that the first case of infection with a new coronavirus was recorded in China on December 8.

On December 30, Chinese doctor Li Wenliang announced on WeChat social network that he had discovered a new disease, “similar to SARS.” Local law enforcement authorities immediately reacted to this message, which at first accused him of spreading rumors. On February 6, Li Wenliang died of pneumonia due to coronavirus.

An outbreak caused by the new coronavirus disease was recorded at the end of December 2019 in Central China. On March 11, the World Health Organization recognized it as a pandemic. Cases of infection recorded in more than a hundred countries, including Russia.

In total, according to WHO, more than 118 thousand people were infected, about 4.3 thousand died. In the Russian Federation 34 cases of infection are registered.
