Coronavirus reaches Spain, while deaths worldwide increase

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Spain has confirmed its first case of coronavirus, as the number of deaths worldwide has reached 259 deaths.

Spanish authorities confirmed that a German tourist had become infected with an infection during a vacation in the Canary Islands.

The man went into hospital on Wednesday after it emerged that he had come into contact with another coronavirus patient in his hometown before flying to Spain.

Britain and France are among 20 countries outside of China to confirm cases of the virus after tech giant Apple has confirmed the closure of all major stores and offices in China.

The German tourist is currently hospitalized in La Gomera, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, and a popular destination for British tourists.

Four other people he was with in Spain have also been tested.

The group had been staying in a rented holiday home near the small town of Hermigua.

A spokesman for the Spanish Ministry of Health said last night: “The National Center for Microbiology has confirmed a case of coronavirus discovered in Spain after tests on one of the samples sent by La Gomera,” he said.

“The patient is quarantined at La Gomera Hospital.”

“He was part of a group of five people under surveillance after it emerged that he had been in contact with a patient diagnosed with the disease in Germany.”
