UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Microsoft said Friday that an Iranian-linked cyber-infiltration group tried to infiltrate email accounts belonging to a US presidential campaign team, government officials and journalists between August and September.
Tom Burt, vice president in charge of security and user trust, said in a statement that the cybersecurity center of the US technology giant monitored a group of more than 2,700 attempts to disclose email accounts belonging to Microsoft users over a period of one month.”
Bert believes the group “comes from Iran and is linked to the Iranian government.”
“The target accounts are linked to a US presidential campaign team, current and former government officials, journalists working to cover international political relations and well-known Iranians living outside their country,” Burt said.
In total, only four accounts have been hacked, none of which is linked to the presidential campaign team or the government, according to the US group.
Relations between Tehran and Washington have been strained since the United States unilaterally withdrew in May 2018 from the nuclear deal signed by major powers with Iran and reimposed economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
