SYRIA (OBSERVATORY) – The political and media adviser of the Syrian president has described the presence of US forces in Syria as “illegal”.
Bouthaina Shaaban, political and media advisor to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, reacted on Wednesday (April 18th) to an article published by the American daily The Wall Street Journal , according to which Donald Trump intends to replace American soldiers operating in Syria with a Arab force.
Interviewed by the Arabic-language edition of Russia Today, Bouthaina Shaaban said: “If the information on the formation of an Arab force in Syria is authentic, this decision will surprise us greatly, because US forces are considered as occupation forces. and the United States military presence in Syria is illegal in nature. It is truly surprising that an occupying government is calling on other parties to come to Syria to replace its forces. It would be unprecedented in international affairs.”
The newspaper The Wall Street Journal referred to a US official, indicating that the Trump administration would seek to establish an Arab force to replace US soldiers currently operating in Syria. The new Arab force is expected to be positioned in northeastern Syria.
The United States has reportedly appealed to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to ask them to guarantee billions of dollars and military sources required to “ensure the security of Syria” after the failure of Daesh.
Donald Trump recently announced his decision to end the presence of US troops in Syria.
