Democratic senators call for new sanctions on Russia

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — According to the Washington Post, three prominent Democratic senators are urging the U.S. administration to impose sanctions on Russia for alleged attempts to influence the 2020 US election.

The corresponding letter was sent to the head of the US Department of State Mike Pompeo and the head of the Ministry of Finance Steven Mnuchin, the leader of the democratic minority in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer and senators Robert Menendez and Sherrod Brown.

The authors of the message urge to draw conclusions from intelligence reports and develop sanctions against those who are responsible for continuing interference with the elections, and they should be introduced both against violators and those who finance their activities.

In addition, senators are calling for restrictive measures against the Russian leadership if it is behind alleged attempts to influence the 2020 US elections.

It was reported that last week the media disseminated information that American congressmen were informed of Russia’s attempts to influence the outcome of the US election by supporting incumbent President Donald Trump and leading the fight for the nomination of Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders.

The Russian side categorically rejects allegations of attempts to influence American elections
