UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Contaminated substances in drinking water can lead to more than 100,000 cancers among only one generation in the United States, according to experts from the Environmental Action Group (EWG).
According to Phys.org, experts at EWG (Nonprofit Organization) calculated the combined impact of 22 carcinogens on human health in 48,363 water supply systems in the United States.
It became clear to researchers that the biggest cause of the appearance of malignant tumors is related to arsenic, the by-products of sterilization and radioactive materials such as uranium and radium.
The researchers also found that the most dangerous water systems are those that use groundwater, because although the concentration of pollutants within the limits allowed, over time can damage human health.
In general, the risk of cancer from contaminated drinking water is two degrees higher than the base rate of one to one million.
Scientists concluded from this, that reducing the level of contaminated compounds in drinking water is the best protection for the health of the population.
