Erdogan explained why Turkey has the right to carry out operation in Syria

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview with Yeni Safak that Ankara has the right to carry out Operation Source of Peace in Syria thanks to an agreement signed in 1998.

“America does not have airspace there (in Syria – Ed.). This is international airspace, this is Syrian airspace. Since it does not belong to the United States, the question of its use is also decided by the regime,” the Turkish leader said.

He noted that the Turkish military are in Syria under the Adan agreement. According to this agreement, if Syria does not take the necessary measures, then Turkish forces “have the right to prosecute terrorists,” Erdogan said.

In addition, the president named three main objectives of the operation: to protect the southern border of Turkey from terrorists, to protect the territorial integrity of Syria and to ensure the “return of the Syrians who were expelled from their homeland.”

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on October 9 announced the launch of Operation Source of Peace in northern Syria against the Kurdistan Workers Party and the Islamic State terrorist group banned in Turkey . Turkish aviation struck the city of Ras al-Ain in the Syrian province of Hasek that same day.

The Syrian city of Tell Abyad on the border with Turkey was also subjected to air strikes. Later it was announced the start of the ground part of the operation.

According to the latest data from the Turkish Ministry of Defense, the military has already attacked 181 targets of Kurdish forces in northern Syria. According to Syrian state television, as a result of Turkish shelling of the border cities of Ras al-Ain, Qamishli, Darbasiya and al-Masraf, eight civilians were killed, 20 were injured.
