EU notes security risk in region due to attacks on Saudi refineries

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia pose a threat to regional security, undermine dialogue-building efforts, the European Foreign Service said.

“An attack by drones at two oil facilities in Saudi Arabia poses a real threat to regional security. At a time when tensions in the region are growing, this attack undermines ongoing de-escalation and dialogue work,” the statement said Sunday.

The EU called for “clearly establishing the facts and determining responsibility” for this attack.

“The EU reiterates its call for maximum restraint and de-escalation,” the statement said.

A fire broke out on Saturday night at the Abkaik refinery in eastern Saudi Arabia and the Khurais refinery east of the capital of Riyadh, owned by the state-owned oil and gas company Saudi Aramco.

Hussite Yemeni rebels later claimed that two Saudi refineries were attacked by fighters of their movement using ten unmanned aerial vehicles. At the same time, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that there is no evidence that the attack came from Yemen, and blamed Iran directly on it.
