EU says London must pay its bill even without an agreement on Brexit

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The European Commission said on Monday that Britain would have to pay a bill of 43 billion euros as part of its pledges to the European Union, even if no agreement on Brexit could be reached.

“All commitments made by the 28 member states must be respected. This applies to the Brexit scenario without agreement so that Britain will have to fulfill all the commitments made during its accession to the European Union,” spokeswoman Mina Andreeva told the daily press conference.

“Paying accounts is essential to starting a new relationship based on mutual trust.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that if Britain leaves the EU without an agreement, it will not have to pay 39 billion pounds (43 billion euros) as part of its commitment to the EU when Brexit is implemented.

On Sunday, he told Britain’s ITV channel that the money would not be “due”.

According to Johnson, this amount will be allocated to contribute to address the consequences associated with the exit without agreement.

Britain is expected to leave the European Union on October 31, but the means to reach an orderly exit deal clash over the Irish border issue.

The agreement between London and the European Union in 2018, which has been repeatedly rejected by the British parliament, includes a mechanism known as a “safety net” opposed by Britain.

The controversial mechanism is aimed at avoiding the creation of a border after the Brexit between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
