UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The number of asylum requests in European Union countries increased by 13% in 2019 compared with 2018, according to a report published on Wednesday by the European Asylum Support Office.
“For the first time since 2015, the number of requests has increased compared to the previous year,” the document says.
This growth was not due to illegal migration, but because of applications from citizens of states entitled to visa-free entry to Schengen countries. We are talking about the countries of Latin America, primarily Venezuela.
In total, more than 714 thousand asylum applications were filed in the EU countries, Switzerland, and Norway in 2019. In 2018, this figure amounted to 635 thousand.
The leaders in the number of applications came from Syria, Afghanistan and Venezuela.
A positive asylum decision was made in 33% of cases. The highest percentage of satisfied applications (more than 80%) was observed among applicants from Syria, Yemen and Eritrea, the lowest – from immigrants from the Western Balkans and Latin America.
