UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — A prominent Chinese scientist has said it will take at least three months to test the effectiveness of a new coronavirus vaccine.
Li Lanjuan runs the State Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases.
She announced that scientists have isolated five strains of the virus, including two that are suitable for vaccine production.
Li said China is going through a peak period in terms of confirmed cases of the epidemic, but stressed that prevention and control measures will significantly reduce the number of further infections.
The government, meanwhile, has called for speeding up work on a vaccine against the new disease.
At a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Li Keqiang, it was decided to expedite approval of drugs that have been effective in clinical trials.
