Extreme situation due to coronavirus declared in Lithuania

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The Lithuanian government has declared an extreme situation throughout the country in connection with the threat of the spread of coronavirus, Lithuania Sputnik reports citing the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic.

“By order of Prime Minister Saulius Skvernialis, the Minister of Health Aureliyus Veriga will be appointed the head of the state operational center for extreme situations,” writes Sputnik.

It is expected that with the announcement of an extreme situation it will be easier to coordinate preventive actions to prepare for the spread of coronavirus, organize the work of institutions, use the state reserve of medical materials, and perform other procedures, the agency adds.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization (WHO) about an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in the central part of the country (Hubei Province).

Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease – this is a new coronavirus. WHO recognized the outbreak as an emergency of international importance and gave the disease its official name – COVID-19.

The number of infected in mainland China has already exceeded 78 thousand people, 2715 have died, over 29 thousand have been cured. According to WHO, in 33 countries recorded more than 80 thousand cases of infection with COVID-19.
