Facebook launches its news service

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — A company accused of media misinformation on Friday announced the launch of a news service in partnership with the media to promote professional journalism and polish the image of the world’s largest social network.

“For years I have been discussing with journalists and journalists how we can support good journalism through Facebook,” said owner Zuckerberg when announcing Facebook News.

“The press is important for our democracy and for advancing together in the face of problems,” he said on his Facebook page. “Major Internet services have a responsibility to work with the press to establish long-term sustainable models to finance this work.”

Zuckerberg is to present the new product in New York, in partnership with Robert Thompson, general manager of News Corporation, a group of Rupert Murdoch, which owns Wall Street Journal and Fox News.

The service was launched on Friday in the form of an experiment among a “small group” of American users, and will be the fruit of selected news from professional journalists and algorithms “tailored to personal choices.”

The new service will be separate from the flow of information received by newsfeed subscribers, where there is information that does not stem from professional media, and will also include articles of partner press organizations.

These partners include more than 200 media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Pebble, ABC, CBS and Fox News.

Nothing has been said so far about the cost of the new product or the amount the partners will receive.

The new service will “highlight the main national news of each day” and focus on “entertainment, health, economy and sports”, the four hubs most visited by Facebook pioneers, the company said in a statement.

The company said it had formed a team of journalists who had been given the “independence of the editorial line” and would select the articles in accordance with guidelines that are accessible to all.
