first case of coronavirus recorded in Sweden

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The first case of infection with a new coronavirus was recorded in the Swedish city of Jönköping, writes The Local portal on Friday, citing the Swedish Public Health Authority.

The young woman became ill, who returned to Sweden from the Chinese city of Wuhan on January 24. It was from this city in China that the spread of coronavirus began.

A few days after arrival, the woman began to cough, and she decided to see a doctor. At the moment, the patient is in an isolated ward in the clinic of infectious diseases. Her condition is not regarded as serious.

“It is important to remember that individual cases do not mean the active spread of infection in Sweden,” said Karin Tegmark Wissel, head of the department of microbiology at the country’s public health agency.

Stockholm-based SAS has canceled all flights to mainland China since Friday.

In total, since December last year, when the coronavirus began to spread from Wuhan, China registered 9,692 confirmed cases of the disease, and a fatal outcome was recorded in 213 cases. After undergoing treatment, 171 people were discharged from medical facilities.

New virus infections have been reported in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and also in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, the USA, Singapore, France, Malaysia, Nepal and other countries.

The World Health Organization on Thursday declared an outbreak of coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern.
