TANZANIA (OBSERVATORY) – At least nine people have died in Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial capital, after heavy rains hit homes and roads, authorities in Tanzania said on Monday.
Police chief Lazaro Mambosasa told reporters the nine had been killed by heavy rains over the past three days.
Television footage showed residents trying to shelter on rooftops. Authorities ordered schools to be closed for two days from Tuesday to assess damage to the infrastructure.
Dar es Salaam, a coastal city of 5 million people, is frequently flooded due to poor sanitation and unplanned residential buildings.
The state-run meteorological agency said monsoon rains were expected to continue until May.
