Germany warns France against undermining NATO

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Germany’s foreign minister warned on Sunday against undermining NATO, in Berlin’s strongest response yet to comments by French President Emmanuel Macron criticizing the military alliance.

Macron told The Economist last week that NATO was in “clinical death”, citing a lack of coordination and unpredictability of US policy under President Donald Trump. He was also skeptical of a security rule that an attack on a NATO member meant attacking allies.

“It would be a mistake to undermine NATO,” Mass wrote in a column published by Der Spiegel on its website. Without the United States, neither Germany nor Europe can effectively protect itself. ”

Mas supported Macron’s call to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities. “That is why we are working with France to work hard to build a Europe that works closely together on security policy,” he said.

But he warned against causing a confrontation between the European Union and NATO. “Yes, we want a strong and sovereign Europe, but we need it in a strong NATO framework and not as a substitute,” he said.

Mas called for a European Security Council, of which Britain is a member, regardless of its planned exit from the EU.

He said he was working closely with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian, adding that Germany aims to provide a framework for the European Security Council during its presidency of the EU in the second half of 2020.
