UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Police are looking for a gold toilet stolen from Blenheim Palace, where Winston Churchill was born, the regional police department said.
The cost of a toilet made of solid 18-carat gold is estimated at one million pounds (more than 80 million rubles). It was made by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.
The toilet was present in the palace as an installation at an art exhibition, but it could be used. At the same time, the museum guard was nearby, behind the toilet door. In 2016, the installation was exhibited in New York at the Guggenheim Museum.
“Attackers entered the palace at night and left the crime scene at about 4:50 in the morning. There were no injuries. Since the toilet was connected to the sewage system and the water supply system, its theft caused significant damage and led to flooding,” the police said in a statement.
It is assumed that there were several intruders and they arrived at the palace in two cars. Currently, a 66-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of robbery.
“A work of art has not yet been found. We ask everyone who heard or saw something suspicious during the incident to contact the police,” the document says.
The museum confirmed that the toilet disappeared and tweeted that the palace would be closed at least until the end of the day because of the incident.
Due to an unforeseen incident at the Palace we are closed until lunchtime, the Park will remain open.
Apologies for any inconvenience.
