Guterres urges governments to cooperate to avoid an economic recession

US, WASHINGTON (NEWS OBSERVATORY) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday urged world governments to cooperate to avoid the economy falling into recession against the backdrop of the emerging coronavirus.

“In addition to provoking a public health crisis, the virus also affects the global economy,” Guterres wrote in an article in the Portuguese newspaper “Publico”.

The former Portuguese Prime Minister said that the spread of the virus hindered the smooth functioning of the supply networks and led to a decrease in investments and consumption, in a manner that led to “a real and escalating risk of a global recession.”

He pointed out that “every country will be unable to stand alone.

Therefore, governments must cooperate more than ever in order to boost the economy, increase public investment, encourage business and secure support for affected individuals and communities” due to the spread of the epidemic.
