Haitham bin Tariq al-Said swore allegiance on Saturday as the new Sultan of Oman after the death of current ruler Qaboos bin Said, state television reported, Anadolu Agency (AA) reports.
Sultan Qaboos passed away at the age of 79 after a long illness.
Oman’s state television said authorities had opened a letter from the late sultan to name his successor, without giving further explanation.
Qaboos bin Said has been a sultan since 1970 and was the eighth sultan of the Al Said House. He was the monarch who stood most in the throne among the current Arab rulers.
