FRANCE (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — French President Emmanuel Macron questioned how NATO would act if Syria launched a military attack on Turkey, a member of the alliance.
“What is the fate of Article 5 of the NATO treaty in the future?”
Article 5 of the founding treaty of NATO provides for “collective defense” in the event of any member of the NATO attack or external attack.
Asked if he still believed in Article 5, Macron replied: “I don’t know.”
Macron considered that NATO is in a state of “clinical death”, in part because of the US veto of its commitments to its NATO allies and the actions of Turkey, a member of the alliance.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have rejected French President Emmanuel Macron’s view that NATO is on the verge of death.
