Huawei introduced a processor with a built-in 5G modem

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Huawei has officially unveiled at the IFA 2019 its new flagship single-chip platform, the Kirin 990 5G. A key feature of the new items is the integrated 5G modem, but in addition, Huawei promises high performance and advanced capabilities related to artificial intelligence.

On Friday, Huawei Technologies introduced its new mobile chipset, continuing to implement plans for the release of the Mate 30 line, despite the uncertainty as to whether the new phones will be able to run the operating system and Android applications, reports Reuters.

The Kirin 990 5G single-chip platform is manufactured using an improved 7-nm process technology using EUV lithography (7-nm + EUV). At the same time, the novelty is one of the most complex processors for smartphones, which has 10.3 billion transistors.

The company called the Kirin 990 “the first universal 5G system,” describing it as superior alternatives from Qualcomm and Samsung. “This is the world’s most powerful 5G on-chip system. It is the world’s most powerful 5G processor,” said Richard U, general manager of consumer products and telecommunications equipment department of Huawei, in his speech. The

new generation of processors uses ARM cores of the same architecture – Cortex- A76 and Cortex A55, as last year’s Kirin 980.

The company claims that the performance of Kirin 990 5G is higher than that of Snapdragon 855. In particular, in Geekbench, the new product is 9-10% faster than its competitor, GPU faster than 6%, and energy efficiency better by 20%.

Huawei plans to use the Kirin 990 only in its own devices, Reuters notes.

Huawei introduced two versions of the chip at once: with support for fifth-generation networks and without – the Kirin 990 5G received an integrated modem that works in networks from 2G to 5G. The maximum download speed is 2.3 Gb / s, and downloads are 1.25 Gb / s. According to the company, the processor will be able to work with a standalone (SA) and non-autonomous (NSA) 5G network.

The two-dimensional neuroprocessor Da Vinci is responsible for the functions of artificial intelligence. The central processor has 2 cores with a frequency of 2.86 GHz, 2 at 2.36 GHz and 4 at 1.95 GHz. The capabilities of the Kirin 990 without 5G are slightly different: the last two sets of cores operate at 2.09 GHz and 1.86 GHz.

The two versions have differences in the neural processor (NPU): the top version has two large and one small core, and the younger one has one large and one small.

As a graphics accelerator, the 16-core Mali G76 is used. This GPU is used in both versions of the chip.

Huawei has also updated the image processor (ISP), increasing its speed and uptime. The new version of ISP has improved the ability to shoot at night or in low light conditions due to noise reduction and real-time post-processing using AI.

The first smartphone on the Kirin 990 will be the flagship Huawei Mate 30, which will be presented on September 19 at a special event in Munich.

According to sources, it is not known whether the Mate 30 will be able to launch Google services, because in May the company was blacklisted in the United States. This ban cut off 5% of Huawei’s market share in Europe, but the world’s second-largest smartphone maker is keen to bring them back, as the proliferation of ultra-fast 5G networks will force consumers to buy new phones.
