IRAN (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The military shot down a foreign drone over the southern port city of Mahshahr in the southern province of Khuzestan on Friday, the official IRNA news agency quoted an Iranian official as saying.
“The shot down plane belonged to a foreign country,” Khuzestan governor Gholamreza Shariati was quoted as saying. We have recovered its wreckage and are being examined.”
Iranian media reported earlier that the army shot down a drone over the city of Mahshahr, without giving further details.
The official or the official Iranian media did not say whether the plane was civilian or military or the country it came from.
The US Central Command said no US planes had been shot down, adding that all US planes had been counted.
“The alleged reports that a US plane was shot down are incorrect,” the Central Command said in a statement. If a drone crashes into the CENTCOM area, it is not a Pentagon asset.”
Israel, Iran’s arch-foe, declined to comment on the incident.
“The Iranian army’s observatory missile defense system shot down this drone near the southwestern port of Imam Khomeini,” the semi-official Tasnim news agency said.
The semi-official Mehr news agency aired coverage that it said depicted the missile attack that brought down the “enemy drone”. The short recording showed a land-based missile and then an explosion in the sky.
The agency quoted the commander of the air defense forces, Ali Reza Sabahi Fard, said: “This firm step, which was the launch of a missile came in response to the penetration of a foreign plane march hostile to the airspace of the country where the plane was destroyed in the wake of the full vigilance of the comprehensive air defense network of the country before reaching Sensitive”.
“The people of the port of Imam Khomeini heard the sound of the missile being fired from the port of Imam at dawn today,” the Arabic-language Al-Alam TV channel reported.
In June, Iran shot down a US drone, which the Revolutionary Guards said was flying over southern Iran. Washington said Iran had shot down the plane in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated since US President Donald Trump last year pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and reimposed sanctions.
Israel says it has carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria, some against Iranian targets, to prevent Tehran from being there.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted in August that Israel could take part in attacks on sites of Iranian-backed groups in Iraq.
