UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Protests have been staged in Iran today following a Friday prayer following last night’s US-led attack in Baghdad, where the commander of the elite Iranian Quds unit, Qassem Soleimani, was killed, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).
After praying the prayer at Imam Khomeini Mosalla Mosque, thousands of people took to the streets of Tehran, expressing dissatisfaction over Suleiman’s assassination in Baghdad.
During the protests, which were also staged in many other Iranian cities, slogans such as “Cursed is America”, “Cursed is Israel” could be heard.
Last night’s attack on Baghdad airport killed Commander Soleimani, who led the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s elite unit, while the United States Department of Defense said the attack was carried out by US forces under the direction of President Donald Trump.
Iran’s religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamnei warned of severe retaliation for those responsible for Suleiman’s assassination.
Khamnei today appointed Ismail Qaani as the new commander of the elite Quds unit and declared three days of mourning in Iran.
