Iran sells oil from a tanker detained in Gibraltar

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Iran sold oil from a tanker previously detained in Gibraltar. The owner of the vessel will decide on his next destination, the Iranian agency IRIB reports citing a representative of the Iranian government on Monday.

Tehran has announced that it has deployed a naval destroyer with cruise missiles to help secure Iranian ships.

Iran is embroiled in a growing confrontation in the region due to US sanctions designed to halt Iranian oil exports.

A representative of the Iranian government did not name the recipient of the oil transported by the tanker Adrian Darya 1. After Gibraltar freed the ship on August 18, the United States said it would take all possible measures to prevent oil supplies to Syria in violation of US sanctions.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran sold the oil to this vessel, and now the owner and buyer of this oil will decide the destination of the cargo,” official spokesman for the government, Ali Rabiya, told Reuters.

Refinitiv Eikon’s shipping data showed on Monday that the tanker was no longer registered as heading to Turkey, indicated as the destination on the weekend. There was no new destination.

The tanker data is currently located south of mainland Greece, west of the island of Crete.
