Iran threatens a broad response to any US move

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Iran continued its defiance of the United States in the wake of attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure claimed by Tehran’s allied Houthi movement and said on Friday it would counter any US plots against it “from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.”

The latest remarks came from General Yahya Rahim Safavi, a senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, as President Hassan Rouhani prepares to leave the country for UN General Assembly meetings in New York next week.

Both sides said they wanted to avoid all-out war because of developments in the Gulf region but took firm positions. The United States has been seeking an international maritime security alliance since the attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf.

Yemen’s Iranian-allied Houthi movement, which is fighting a Saudi-led military alliance in Yemen, has claimed responsibility for the September 14 attack on two Saudi oil facilities, one of the world’s largest oil processing plants.

US and Saudi officials reject the claim and say Iran is behind the attacks, a charge Tehran denies.

“If the Americans think about any conspiracies, the Iranian nation will retaliate from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean,” Rahim Safavi was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying on Friday.

“US President Donald Trump will face the same fate as the six presidents who preceded him and who failed to impose their political will on the Iranian nation,” said Rahim Safavi, a former Revolutionary Guards commander.
