UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised on Monday that his country would introduce tough financial measures to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
For the Iranian leaders to have no doubts about Washington’s intentions, the United States is ready to put “unprecedented” financial pressure on Tehran, US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo said.
“We will subject the Iranian regime to unprecedented financial pressures. Iran’s leaders will no longer have any doubts about our resolve, “said Mr.Pompeo, speaking at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.
According to the US Secretary of State, his country recognizes Iran’s right to protect its people but will not allow it to endanger the citizens of other states.
He recalled that after his exit from the Iran nuclear agreement Washington would reinstate its sanctions against Tehran and introduce new ones. According to him, these restrictive measures will only be lifted if “tangible and lasting changes” are made in Iranian politics.
The Islamic Republic must withdraw from Syria, where it supports Bashar al-Assad, stop interfering in the conflicts in the region and support groups such as Hezbollah, interfere in the affairs of its neighbors, or threaten others, said Mike Pompeo.
On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced that he was disengaging his country from the nuclear deal with Iran signed by his predecessor Barack Obama. The White House leader also said he will restore sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
