Is snow the best cure for coronavirus?

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Snow goes! Despite the fact that no one had bold expectations or fears about the weather, a sudden snowfall covered the city streets with white snow.

Welcoming the first snow of the year of the Rat, many citizens ask themselves: “Can snow and cold kill the virus?”, “Can snow absorb the coronavirus?”, “Can snowy weather help weaken the spread of the epidemic?”.

Many Internet users have similar questions. Experts believe that it is difficult to determine the relationship between the weather and the outbreak. Studying the new coronavirus that causes pneumonia still takes some time, so people should not make rash decisions and go outside.

Professor Wang Guiqiang, chairman of the committee committee of the Infectious Diseases Division of the China Medical Association and director of the Infectious Diseases Department of Peking University’s First Hospital, said in an interview with Health Times on February 5th that theoretically, snowy weather would not help much in alleviating the spread of the epidemic because the new coronavirus is being transmitted by airborne contact at close range. Regarding claims that snow can “swallow the virus,” Professor Wang Guiqiang says they are fundamentally wrong.

Earlier at a Beijing press conference on the prevention and control of new coronavirus pneumonia on February 2, spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Health Commission Gao Xiaojun stated that snow is definitely not bad, and it will benefit in preventing virus protection. However, there is still some uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of snow and cold in the prevention and control of pneumonia caused by coronavirus itself. No matter what the weather is, it is important to carefully consider self-defense: reliance on scientifically proven methods of control and rational treatment is more important than snow or any other change in weather. Professor Wang Guiqiang also advised adhering to scientific methods of self-defense: the obligatory wearing of medical masks, frequent washing of hands, and avoiding crowded places. All this will be much more effective.

Wang Linghan, director of the Infectious Diseases Emergency Department at Beijing Ditan Hospital, believes that the understanding of the severity of the epidemic by citizens should not change due to weather changes. “Take flu as an example. In winter and early spring, the weather is especially cold, but this is the most active phase for the flu virus. Coronavirus is a new virus that has already mutated. Under what weather conditions it dies, it is still unknown, but it will take some time to study it.”

Zhang Limin, head physician of the Department of Respiratory Care and Serious Illness Care at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, also believes that one should not be overly optimistic and see a panacea in the cold snap. “Not cold kills viruses. Some laboratory coronavirus samples are stored at low temperatures and can survive for a long time, ”he said.

Regarding the impact of snowy weather on the epidemic situation, both Wang Lihan and Zhang Limin believe that it is too early to draw conclusions, and the causal relationship between these phenomena is more complicated. Zhang Limin notes that, on the one hand, snowy weather can really reduce the spread of the virus by airborne droplets, and particles of the infected carrier can remain on the ground, and on the other, the virus can die for no reason at all. Wang Linghan believes that air temperature during snowfall, humidity, and snowfall duration are factors that need to be comprehensively analyzed.

Changes in the weather gave a psychological signal, as a result of which everyone began to believe that the situation with the epidemic was taken under control. But at the moment, it’s best to still stay at home and reduce contacts with the outside world. If you want to go outside to play snowballs with your friends, the risk of getting the virus will increase. This will not benefit either your safety or the overall control of the spread of the epidemic.

Now is a crucial time to stop the further spread of the virus, and people are trying not to leave home. In addition to airborne transmission, the virus can also enter the body through touch. If, in a public place, you touch an infected coronavirus and then touch your eyes, you can also get sick

Dear friends, please keep calm and do not go outside. If you need to go out, do not forget about protective masks and wash your hands as often as possible. Take care of your own safety.
