Israeli forces kill a Palestinian at a checkpoint in the West Bank

PALESTINE, WEST BANK (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Israeli troops shot at a Palestinian man carrying a knife at a military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank on Friday, Palestinian defense officials said, and Palestinian officials said he died of his wounds.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, a Palestinian was heading towards a checkpoint between Israel and the central West Bank city of Tulkarm, carrying a “knife in his hand to appear to attack security personnel”.

One of the troops called on the attacker to stop,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the man was a Palestinian and died of his wounds. Palestinian officials gave no further details.

The Israeli Defense Ministry distributed a photo it said was the scene. A black plastic cover could be seen, which ministry spokeswoman Betty Ilovici said was placed over the body of the Palestinian by the side of the road and the checkpoint in the background was meters away.

The West Bank has been plagued by violence since US-sponsored peace talks with Israel collapsed in 2014.
