UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – If the United States does not impose sanctions against the Russian Federation today, this does not mean that sanctions will not be followed tomorrow and there is no preparation for this, first deputy chairman of the State Duma international affairs committee Dmitry Novikov (CPRF) said.
On Wednesday, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told reporters that the Russian Embassy in Washington received a notification from the administration of the US President Donald Trump that no new sanctions are to be introduced against Russia in the near future. At the same time on Tuesday, State Department spokesman Heather Nauert said that sanctions against Russia are still being considered.
“… The State Department is talking about the preparation of a new stage of sanctions, and Trump says that we will not impose sanctions now.If sanctions are not introduced today, this does not mean that sanctions will not be imposed tomorrow and that this operation is not being prepared” , – the interlocutor of the agency said.
The parliamentarian believes that sanctions can not be announced every day and every new stage of sanctions is followed by a period of assessment of the situation.
“The US policy will continue to be controversial with regard to our country, especially with such an inconsistent president as Trump is, with situational character connected with the weakening of (sanction) attacks, then with the intensification of attacks. Now, after the introduction of the previous package of sanctions, it was decided to take a break,” the deputy believes.
Novikov added that one should not rely on the US President’s statement on the suspension of sanctions against Russia in the near future. According to him, as another reason for the expansion of sanctions may be the adoption of a law on anti-sabotage of the Russian Federation against the US, which the State Duma is going to adopt in May.
“Trump himself said that we can always go back to the subject of sanctions and we will always find a reason for that.” I think there should be no illusions, “he concluded.
On Friday, the State Duma will discuss the bill “On measures of influence (counteraction) on unfriendly actions of the United States and (or) other foreign states.” The co-authors of the project were 327 deputies of the State Duma. On Tuesday, the chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, together with the head of the State Duma Health Promotion Committee Dmitry Morozov and the founder of the “Vera” Hospice Care Foundation, Anna Federmesser, discussed certain provisions of the draft law.
