Italy, passenger ship placed under quarantine for suspected coronavirus

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — A large passenger ship sailing in the Mediterranean has docked at the port of the Italian city of Civitavecchia due to the high body temperature observed in a Chinese couple aboard the vessel, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, there were 6,000 passengers aboard the Costa Crociere.

The Chinese couple suspected of the presence of the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was initially treated at the ship’s nursing home and later sent to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome.

As a precautionary measure, the Chinese couple’s room and the nearby passenger rooms have been emptied and quarantined.

The ship is said to have carried 751 Chinese passengers.

Otherwise, coronavirus has so far claimed the lives of at least 170 people in China, and over 7,000 have been infected. Also, more than 60,000 people have been under medical surveillance.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic late last year, China has placed the city of Wuhan, where the virus appeared, under a deadlock in an effort to prevent the spread.

In addition to China, cases of the virus have also been recorded in Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the US, Singapore, France, Germany, Vietnam and Canada.

Travelers from China are being screened at airports around the world, while some airlines have suspended flights to Wuhan.
