Jacques Chirac buried in Paris

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The funeral of former French President Jacques Chirac took place on Monday at the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris, French media reported.

The funeral was held in the presence of only loved ones. Chirac was buried next to his daughter Laurence, who died in 2016.

Monday in France declared the day of national mourning. On government buildings flags are lowered.

Earlier, a solemn service was held at the Saint-Sulpice Cathedral in Paris.

The ceremony was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as dozens of world leaders. Russian President Vladimir Putin attended, but he did not stay for a gala dinner at the Champs Elysees.

Chirac died on September 26 at the age of 86 at his home in Paris. He served as president of France from 1995 to 2007, and at the end of his powers, he left public and political life.
