Japan: number of coronavirus infections rose to 850

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The presence of coronavirus infection COVID-2019 was confirmed in another 12 people in Japan, most of them are in Tokyo and the northern island of Hokkaido, the NHK television channel reported with reference to data received from the authorities of Japanese prefectures and the country’s Ministry of Health.

Thus, the total number of cases as of Monday evening was 850 people. The largest number of people infected in the country were in Tokyo (32 people), Hokkaido (30 people) and in Kanagawa and Aichi Prefectures (17 people each).

Among those whose tests revealed the presence of coronavirus infection, 691 people are passengers or crew members of the Diamond Princess cruise ship in the Japanese port of Yokohama.

In turn, the Kyodo agency reported that the country’s authorities may already on Tuesday ask the population not to organize mass events over the next two weeks, which are considered critical to prevent the spread of the virus.

In addition, in the event of a sharp increase in those infected in some particular regions, they may ask residents of those areas with a request not to go outside and stay in their homes.

On Friday, Japanese authorities completed the first phase of the evacuation of passengers from the ship after a two-week quarantine. A total of 970 passengers went ashore. Last weekend, the country’s health minister, Kato Katsunobu, admitted that 23 passengers were allowed to leave the ship based on analyzes made prior to the quarantine period.

Now about 1.2 thousand people continue to be on the ship – these are crew members and passengers, including those who are waiting for their flights home. On Saturday, about 100 passengers left the ship, who had close contact with someone who had been infected, they were all transferred to a dormitory in an educational institution in Saitama Prefecture, where they will spend some more time to exclude the presence of the virus.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization about an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in the central part of the country (Hubei Province).

Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease – this is a new coronavirus. WHO recognized the outbreak as an emergency of international importance and gave the disease its official name – COVID-19. The number of people infected in mainland China has already exceeded 77 thousand people, 2592 have died, over 24 thousand have been cured. The number of infections outside of China, according to the WHO, reached 1769, 17 people died.
