Kosovo: 6 in prison for planning attacks against NATO forces

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — A Kosovo court sentenced six people, including a woman, to jail terms of between one and 10 years for planning attacks against NATO forces and residents in Kosovo, Belgium and France.

Muslims make up 90 percent of Kosovo’s population, which became independent from Serbia in 2008. There are just over 4,000 NATO troops there on a mission to maintain fragile peace since the end of the war in 1999.

One of the prosecutors told Reuters the suspects, arrested last year and one with a Belgian passport, were ISIS supporters, some of whom had communicated with Kosovo-born militants involved in the fighting in Syria and Iraq.

“The six were planning terrorist attacks inside and outside Kosovo targeting nightclubs in Gracanica, attacks on the Orthodox Church in northern Mitrovica, attacks targeting NATO forces and other terrorist attacks in France and Belgium,” the court said in its statement late on Wednesday.

The majority of the population in the northern regions of Gracanica and Mitrovica are from the Kosovo Serb minority.

The defendants were charged with participating in foreign wars, a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Prosecutors said they were investigating more than 200 other suspects.
