Kurds called on Russia and Syria to protect the region from Turkish invasion

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Russia and Damascus must protect the territories under the control of the Syrian Kurds from the invasion of Turkey, Badran Jakurd, adviser to the Autonomy of the North and East of Syria (AANES), told RIA.

Earlier, the SDF stated that US forces withdrew from the border with Turkey in northern Syria, violating the agreements reached with Kurdish allies. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan also said that the US military is leaving territories in northern Syria, where Turkey plans to conduct a military operation against Kurdish forces.

“Russia and Damascus should take responsibility for protecting our region from the Turkish attack, because it will also jeopardize Russia’s interests,” Jakurd said.

“We have always recognized and believed in the importance of having a serious dialogue with Damascus, and we will always be open to achieving this goal. Russia could play a role in this, and we believe that it will be extremely important,” said interlocutor of the agency.

“We will do our best to protect our region from any attacks and protect our people. We hope that Russia will be able to play its role in resuming dialogue in order to resolve the Syrian crisis, and we are ready for this purpose to resume dialogue with Damascus,” he added Jacurd.

He noted that the recent decision of US President Donald Trump does not serve the efforts aimed at achieving peace and the fight against terrorism. According to him, this shows that “the two NATO allies reached an agreement to preserve their interests because of their strategic alliance, despite the differences between them.”

“The beginning of any war in our region would have disastrous results for all parties. This will affect not only the Kurds, but also the existence of other communities, such as Assyrians and Armenians, as well as Arabs,” the adviser said.

According to him, Turkey will use radical groups to create inter-religious conflict. He added that the threat also comes from thousands of militants of the Islamic State * terrorist group and their families.
