Libya: Trump warns Erdogan of “foreign interference”

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Any foreign interference will further complicate the situation in Libya, Donald Trump warned in a telephone interview with his Turkish counterpart who plans to deploy soldiers there.

Shortly after the Turkish parliament approved a bill authorizing the dispatch of forces to Libya, Donald Trump warned Recep Tayyip Erdogan against “foreign interference” which would only complicate the situation in that country.

“The President of the United States held a telephone conversation today with the Turkish head of state. The two leaders discussed bilateral and regional issues. President Trump stressed that foreign interference would complicate the situation in Libya, “the White House said in a statement after the interview.

Deployment approved

A motion authorizing the sending of Turkish troops to Libya to assist the government of national unity (GNA) of Fayez al-Sarraj was adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on January 2. Members of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as of the Nationalist Action Party (MHP), supported this bill submitted to parliament on December 30.

The government of M.el-Sarraj had officially requested on December 26 military aid “air, land and sea” from Ankara to cope with the advance of the Libyan National Army (ANL) of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
