Macron: Brazil’s women must be ashamed of their boss

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Brazilian women are likely to be ashamed of President Jair Bolsonaro, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday in response to the president’s mocking of Macron’s wife on Facebook.

The two presidents have been bickering for a few weeks, and Macron blames Bolsonaro for the Amazon fires and accuses him of lying about climate change policy.

Bolsonaro responded on Sunday to a Facebook post that compared the looks of his 37-year-old wife Michelle to Macron’s wife, Brigitte, 66.

“Don’t humiliate the man, hahaha,” Bolsonaro wrote in a comment that drew criticism and was described as “sexist”.

Asked about the incident at a news conference in Biarritz, where the G7 leaders meet, Macron said the comment was “very disrespectful” to his wife.

“It’s sad, it’s sad for him first and for Brazilians … Brazilian women are probably ashamed of their boss.”

“Because I have a lot of respect and respect for the people of Brazil, I hope that they will soon have a qualified president.”

Later on Monday, Bolsonaro denounced Macron’s plan to form an international alliance to protect the Amazon, saying on Twitter that it would treat Brazil as a colony.

An image of the Amazon forest fires posted by Macron on Twitter, ahead of the G7 summit, sparked outrage in Brazil. “Our house is burning,” Macron wrote.

Macron said Bolsonaro lied to him about his commitments to combat climate change.

Since Bolsonaro took office in January, he has been attacking Brazil’s environmental bases and announced plans to develop the Amazon.
