Man tries to break into a mosque in eastern France

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — A man attempted to storm the Grand Mosque of Colmar in eastern France on Saturday in an unidentified operation, sources said.

Authorities in the Upper Rhine region of Alsace announced that a man had tried to break into the “entrance of the Grand Mosque before 20:00” (18:00 GMT).

“No one was injured” except the driver, she said, adding that “the investigation is underway.”

Colmar prosecutor Catherine Sorita Menard told AFP that the man was wounded with a white weapon he was carrying and taken to hospital where he would undergo surgery.

“He will be examined by a psychiatrist as soon as possible,” she said, adding that preliminary information indicated that he had “psychological problems.”

Eyewitnesses said he chanted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great), but this information has not been confirmed. “He will be placed in pre-trial detention and will be questioned as soon as possible,” she said.

“Then we will know more about his motives,” she said, stressing that there were no casualties despite the presence of “some people in the mosque” at the time.

“Investigations have been carried out on the car,” she said.

The newspaper “Lalzas” that experts dismantled explosives inspected the car “which did not contain explosives.”
