Merkel: We must return to the nuclear deal with Iran to defuse tensions in the Middle East

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Tuesday for a return to an international agreement that restricts Iran’s nuclear activities as the only way to defuse tensions in the Middle East.

“We see the agreement to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities as the cornerstone we need to return to,” Merkel told a news conference with Jordan’s King Abdullah.

“But there is also a long list of burdens caused by Iran, such as the ballistic missile program and its role in Syria.”

“Tensions have increased in the region over the past few days and Germany will always support a halt to the escalation. Long-term solutions can only be achieved through a political process.”
